Caryl Swale
“We work with some of the finest contemporary artists, who help shape our cultural DNA and encourage a creative spirit in our hotels.” ME Meliá
In Malta the work of British artist Caryl Swale can be found at ME Meliá Hotel at Mercury Tower by Zaha Hadid Architects, “an exquisitely designed hotel that blends creativity with sophistication.”
A mid-career artist with a background in site-specific and decorative art, Swale’s portfolio of figurative and abstract work spans drawing and painting in oil, watercolour, acrylic and mixed media, portraiture, still-life and landscape, human, animal and plant-life.
Inspired by Renaissance painter Albrecht Dürer, masters of light Sargent and Sorolla, pre-raphaelite John William Waterhouse, illustrators Kay Nielson and Stephanie Rew, Swale’s diverse influences manifest themselves in her love of delicate lighting, rich colour, pattern, metallics, graphic shapes and stylised human form. Since graduating from Newport School of Art, now part of the University of South Wales, her artistic practice has run parallel to a portfolio career as an art teacher, signwriter, seamstress, mural painter and interior designer and decorator. Her work can be found in hotels, restaurants, retail outlets, banks, stately homes and other public spaces across the UK, France and Malta. She is currently illustrating a new book on creativity by an award-winning UK writer.
