Artist Secrets - series 2 - episode 5
Using glazes to create atmospheric paintings
Allura is pleased to publish the fifth episode in series two of Artist Secrets.
In Episode 5 - Acrylic Glazing local painter Kevin Sciberras chats with host Laura Swale about his artistic genre, style, media and techniques and about finding inspiration in Malta’s urban environment.
In Episode 5 art teacher Kevin goes on to paint a local townscape in order to demonstrate an acrylic paint technique he typically uses in his work, known as glazing.
This episode may be of interest to other artists wanting to expand their repertoire of skills, or to other art teachers, as an educational resource to share in class.
Kevin’s preferred medium is acrylic paints, namely Amsterdam acrylics by Royal Talens.
In other episodes, series two also covers watercolour, oil, water-based oils and gouache, and techniques including impasto, pouring, wet-on-wet, collage and image transfer.
A big thank you to Kevin Sciberras
We would like to thank Kevin for taking part in Artist Secrets.
Kevin is an established and prolific artist whose recognisable scenes are increasingly popular with art buyers. Given the maturity of his practice and his background in art education, it was no surprise to us how comfortable Kevin was throughout our shoot. Both in conversation and while demonstrating on camera, Kevin was articulate and composed, working quickly and with confidence, to produce yet another striking addition to his Allura Art portfolio.
The painting produced in episode five features one of the artist’s favourite Maltese scenes. Citta Vittoriosa is an old fortified city on the south side of the Grand Harbour. It is dominated by the Collegiate Church of St. Lawrence and the church of the Annunciation, a landmark of historic importance run by the Dominican Order.
The semi-abstract style, expressive brushstrokes and the balance between warm and cool colours which characterise the piece are typical of the artist’s signature, painterly style.
SPOILER ALERT!
Citta Vittoriosa is currently available in the Kevin Sciberras collection of Allura Art. However, if you don’t want to spoil the big reveal, why not first watch it being painted in Kevin’s episode.
