New originals fresh off the easel

In this latest blog post we introduce some of the most recent paintings to be added to the Allura Art Collection.

These include artworks by Rosette Bonello, Kevin Sciberras, Debbie Bonello, Jo Dounis, Bob Cardona and Natasha Dadush.

We also hear from the artists.

Rosette Bonello

New Beginnings is one of the latest pieces from informal artist Rosette Bonello.

“Figurative art provides the human brain with clear visual information, images of a tree, a boat or an apple for example,” she explains. “Abstract art, however, reduces the complex visual world around us to its essence of form, line, colour and light. It gives the viewer the freedom to explore the artwork and assign one’s own meaning to the piece.”

Kevin Sciberras

Mqabba - Aerial View is one of the latest pieces from one of Allura Art’s newest artists. Kevin Sciberras is known for streetscapes, skylines, rooftops and other urban landscapes, which he depicts in a semi-abstract style.

In Mqabba - Aerial View we see the typical layout of an old Maltese village, with the parish church at its centre.

“I’m very much inspired by the urban environment,” says Kevin, “I paint what I feel, enjoy and absorb from my surroundings and I try to capture the character of these exterior spaces.”

Debbie Bonello

Happily Lost by Debbie Bonello

Happily Lost by Debbie Bonello

“Not all who wander are lost,” as the saying goes. The scene depicted by artist Debbie Bonello in Happily Lost is of no particular location. Instead the artist set out to capture the essence of our experience when we wander in the countryside with no specific destination in mind.

“In Malta we are blessed with good weather on most days of the year,” says Debbie., “so when I need a break from my studio work, I head outdoors.”

“There is no comparison between painting from a photograph and painting directly from a scene in front of you. I can still recall the sounds, smells and atmosphere of each and every location I have been to.”

Jo Dounis

Violets by Jo Dounis

In her recent piece entitled Violets, abstract painter Jo Dounis experiments with shades of violet, green and gold, in an organic, fluid-form piece reminiscent of a bed of violets.

“My desire is to connect with people through my art on a deeply emotional level,” explains Jo,. “I want viewers to lose themselves in my paintings.”

“If I come across colours, textures or vistas which inspire the same emotions in me as those I wish to convey in my art, I am motivated to take paint to canvas and share those feelings. I absolutely love what I do.”

Bob Cardona

Deadhead Sunset by Bob Cardona

Bob Cardona is the very latest artist to join Allura Art.

His recent painting Deadhead Sunset is a typically Maltese piece, silhouetting, as it does, a native Bullwort flowerhead against the warmly-lit sky as the sun drops over the Gozitan countryside.

“I take great pleasure in creating images that others can enjoy,” says Bob.

“Every new painting is a personal challenge. Patina, light and composition are all aspects that need to be carefully considered and executed. I try to paint images which are obvious and understandable, rather than obtuse, abstract or esoteric.”

Natasha Dadush

Isla Spring Afternoon, Maltese landscape by Natasha Dadush for sale on Allura Art

Isla Spring Afternoon by Natasha Dadush

In her plein-air piece Isla Spring Afternoon, painter Natasha Dadush captures the Mediterranean light falling on Malta’s Grand Harbour, with Isla (Senglea) lit up warmly in the foreground.

The artist tackles her varied subjects ‘alla prima’ and directly from life. “I find endless inspiration in the landscapes and cityscapes of Malta, its great architecture and beautiful light,” says Natasha.

“The most important element of my artistic development has been painting from life and on location. Through direct observation I can capture the effects of light that are often lost in photo.”

“I am passionate about painting. I try to capture an impression, the essence of a subject, in as few brushstrokes as possible, for maximum impact.
