New landscapes and townscapes

Mdina countryside by Christopher Saliba

Mdina Countryside by Christopher Saliba is a bold, textured interpretation of Mdina and its surroundings. Expressive brushwork adds atmosphere and a sense of timelessness, while contrasting reds and greens lead the eye to the historic cathedral, perched high on the hilltop.

Christopher Saliba was featured in the Times of Malta article The Church as Muse with other local artists who paint Malta’s iconic skylines.

Aerial view of Mellieha by Kevin Sciberras

Another artist drawn to Malta’s churches and townscapes is Kevin Sciberras. Aerial View of Mellieha is a dynamic composition of architectural forms rendered with expressive brushstrokes and rich vibrant colours. The elevated vantage point adds depth, movement and expansiveness to the scene.

Balconies in Valletta by Kevin Sciberras

Balconies in Valletta, also by Kevin Sciberras, features the traditional Maltese balconies in their many colours. The fragmented ‘cubist’ planes, flatten the perspective, lending an unreal quality to the scene.

Ta' Pinu From a Distance by Steve Sciberras

Ta' Pinu From a Distance by Steve Sciberras

Artist Steve Sciberras gives us Ta’ Pinu from a Distance. In this tranquil rural scene, prickly pears stretch out their fleshy green arms, laden with with ripe pink fruit, in harmony with the warm rosy hues of Ta' Pinu Church, perched majestically on the horizon.

View from Isla by Natasha Dadush

View from Isla by Natasha Dadush

Artist Natasha Dadush presents View from Isla, also known as Città Invicta (The Invincible City), a historic seaside fortress in Malta. The artwork is dominated by rich red hues, symbolic of resilience and strength, juxtaposed against a muted, grey sky. The monochromatic palette evokes a sense of nostalgia and timelessness, immortalising the ancient city.

Birgu Marina by Natasha Dadush

Birgu Marina by Natasha Dadush

Birgu Marina, also by Natasha Dadush, was painted en plein-air during the traditional Maltese festa, or feast - a community event of religious origin held annually in village parishes across Malta and Gozo.

New abstracts

Lì C’è Tutto by Rosette Bonello

Lì C’è Tutto by Rosette Bonello

Lì C’è Tutto by Rosette Bonello is a large scale ‘informal’ or abstract piece, in which we recognise the artist’s typical motifs and central composition. Translated from Italian as ‘It’s all in there’, this artwork is a visual diary of memories and emotions; each brushstroke inviting us to decipher its visual language and meaning.

Journey by Jo Dounis

Journey by Jo Dounis was created using fluid art techniques and is dominated by rich purple tones and swirling patterns. Delicate bubble-like forms float upward, symbolising life's journey into the unknown, and reflecting the choices and uncertainties that shape our paths. The dynamic composition evokes both mystery and introspection, inviting viewers to embrace the beauty of transformation.

Ephemeral by Christopher Saliba

Ephemeral by Christopher Saliba

The last of our featured new artworks is Ephemeral by artist Christopher Saliba; the artist’s nod to the spontaneity of action painting and abstract expressionism. Using a palette knife and sharp utensils, he carves dramatic forms into a densely textured surface, creating shafts of light which penetrate the darkness, evoking drama and symbolising spirituality.
