Having exhibited extensively for almost 25 years in many countries including the U.S.A., Italy and England, Bulgarian artist Bogdan Dyulgerov is now well established..

Abstract Art

Bogdan previously shared his approach to art with us in a Times of Malta article just prior to his Maltese solo exhibition in 2020.

This time round we talk to him about the often misunderstood genre of Abstract Art and his personal relationship with it.

For those who are unfamiliar with or who don’t understand abstract art, how would you define or explain it?

“I always explain it using the example of a musician who plays his guitar or piano and composes a new melody. What the artist does is the same, but he uses colours and forms instead of sounds.”

“I know that not everyone likes what I do, so I just simply explain how my paintings 'come to life'. When I give the people an example of composing music, I think they begin to understand the essence of the abstract painting better. It is an intuitive process, so what is expressed on the canvas is kind of a stream of creative energy passing through the artist as if through a portal, rather than an intellectual decision to simply sit and create a painting.”

What is the most special thing about abstract art?

“Unlimited freedom for the development and expression of the artist's creative imagination.”

What attracted you to abstract rather than representational painting?

“When I avoid the specifics of representational painting, I let the paintings happen like a spontaneous process. Then the result is a very pleasant ‘surprise’. Then, the joy at the end of the creative process for me is much greater.”

Which abstract artist, art movement or styles have inspired your work and why?

“I wouldn't say that an artist or a style has influenced me. For me, the discovery of abstract art happened by itself.”

How would you describe your techniques and materials?

“That is another advantage of abstract painting I believe - using various techniques and materials to create my own world of forms and colours without any restrictions. I love to create multi-layered paintings filled with texture.”

Abstract art is often chosen purely for its colours, to complement home or office decor. What is your opinion on your art being used as decoration?

“I am always happy when my paintings are 'homed'. I think it's part of the life of the painting. Whether it's in a private home, office or gallery, it doesn't really matter to me. The important thing is that my artwork provokes the imagination of the audience and brings joy and positive energies to their homes or offices, even if it is as decoration.”
