Artist Secrets - series 2 - episode 2
How do artists paint realistic-looking 3D objects?
Allura is pleased to publish the second episode in series two of Artist Secrets.
In Episode two - Glazing in Oils host Laura Swale is joined by Maltese artist Christine Porter Lofaro to talk about her subject-matter, style, painting media and process.
The conversation is followed by a practical session, during which Christine demonstrates how to paint objects to give them a realistic, three-dimensional appearance. Hyperrealist painter Christine arranges her subject-matter so as to communicate a concept, then renders it in minute detail, using oil paints. For this particular demonstration, she is showing the process of glazing.
Christine mixes up transparent glazes using oil paints and linseed oil, then applies each glaze in thin layers to localised areas of her canvas in order to gradually build up depth and form.
In other episodes, series two also covers watercolour, acrylic, water-based oil and gouache, and techniques including impasto, wet-on-wet, collage and image transfer.
SPOILER ALERT!
The result of the painting session in episode two is a hyperrealistic piece about diet and discipline. Don’t Stand in Your Own Way reflects on the ambivalence caused by the conflict between our human aspirations and inherent flaws. It is currently available in the Christine Porter Lofaro collection of Allura Art. However, if you don’t want to spoil the big reveal, why not first watch it being painted in Christine’s episode.
