Artist Secrets - series 2 - episode 3
Why is gouache paint becoming popular again?
Allura is pleased to publish the third episode in series two of Artist Secrets.
In Episode three - Gouache local Russian artist Natasha Dadush recreates one of her original plein-air paintings to demonstrate a range of painting techniques in gouache. Natasha’s demonstration is an excellent introduction to the versatile painting medium and its suitability for professional artists and art students as well as young children.
The episode begins with a conversation between Natasha and host Laura Swale in which Natasha
This is followed by a practical session, during which art teacher Natasha demonstrates a series of both opaque and transparent effects which exploit the unique qualities of gouache paint. She uses these techniques to capture the light shining through the clouds and how it reflects on the surface of the water. Natasha also explains how composition, tone and contrast can all be used to direct the eye towards a focal point.
To achieve a watercolour effect, Natasha uses gouache paints in watered down washes. She also mixed the colours with white, to create thicker, more opaque layers. Natasha works in the alla prima technique to build up texture, depth, and perspective.
In other episodes, series two also covers watercolour, acrylic, oil and water-based oil, and techniques including impasto, glazing, wet-on-wet, collage and image transfer.
SPOILER ALERT!
The result of the painting session in episode three is a luminous and uplifting depiction of St Julian’s Bay, an urban stretch of the Maltese coastline on the south-eastern side., which shows the interplay of sunlight and water, with reflections of the sunset and clouds on the surface of the sea.
Windy Sunset Over The Harbour is currently available in the Natasha Dadush collection of Allura Art. However, if you don’t want to spoil the big reveal, why not first watch it being painted in Natasha’s episode.
