Big Time Sensuality

Abstract Art - the beautiful stranger

Allura’s latest exhibition brings together three of Malta’s leading abstract painters to celebrate original art with movement and musicality.

Jo Dounis, Rosette Bonello and Bogdan Dyulgerov

The exhibition - Big Time Sensuality

Their exhibition, named after the trailblazing single Big Time Sensuality by Icelandic songwriter Björk, is about being unafraid to experience the good things in life.

When abstract art burst into the art world, breaking rules and flouting convention, just like Björk, it caused a sensation. Today it remains playful, controversial and liberated, challenging us to enjoy the ride. In the words of the song…

“It takes courage to enjoy it.”

Malta Independent announces launch

The show appears in the Sunday edition of this week’s Malta Independent. In an article which explores how it all began, our artists give their perspective on our fascinating relationship with abstract art.

Meet the artists

The new show features chromatic compositions by Bogdan Dyulgerov, golden harmonies from Rosette Bonello, and Jo Dounis’ dancing blue waters.

With distinct yet complementary styles, the three artists are united in their love of the craft and a desire to have us interpret their images for ourselves.

New York, London, Florence, Miami… the exquisite abstracts of Bogdan Dyulgerov have graced the walls of galleries and art fairs around the globe, establishing the Bulgarian artist as a much sought-after contemporary artist.

He likens himself to a musician composing a new melody. “What the artist does is the same, but he uses colours and forms instead of sounds.”

“I am always very happy when my paintings are 'homed' and find people who love them. Whether it's in a private home, office or gallery, it doesn't really matter to me. The important thing is that my abstract artwork provokes the imagination of the audience and brings joy and positive energies to their homes or offices, even as 'decoration'.”

Rosette Bonello

Rosette Bonello’s ethereal mixed media canvases were hand-picked by the renowned Italian art historian, critic and curator Prof. Giorgio Di Genova, to feature in his Quintetto d'arte series.

She says it “gives the viewer freedom to explore the artwork and assign one’s own meaning to the piece.”

Bonello’s artistic practice evolved symbiotically with her kindergarten teaching career. Witnessing the children’s uninhibited creativity led her to value self-expression and the pleasure of making over societal expectations of art.

“I once read that abstract (or informal) art engages different parts of our mind and I think it makes sense and makes us more creative.”

“I think people respond more emotionally to abstract art than they do to figurative art. When we look at abstract art it requires more of our imagination. It leaves many details unspecified and we have to supply those details. It is very satisfying.”

Jo Dounis

The work of Maltese artist and interior designer Jo Dounis can be found in private collections in the UK, Dubai, Italy, Malta and the USA. She takes inspiration from the ocean views of her Mediterranean homeland, a love of light and a fascination with how colours blend, form and flow.

She says from experience that “sometimes a work of art can ‘pull’ the décor together because the colours of the piece reflect the colours in the space. Other times, a beloved work of art will actually set the tone and colour palette for the furnishings.”

“Whether it be about colour, texture or shape, abstract art says to the viewer ‘make of me what you will’.”
