Celebrating Summer - new art fresh off the easel
As July approaches and the temperature begins to soar, in this latest post from the Allura Art blog we bring you new paintings freshly painted and hot off the easel which capture the spirit of summer. Artists featured this time are Rosette Bonello, Christopher Saliba, Andrew Smith and Jo Dounis.
More new pieces by Allura’s artists can be found on the Allura Art website. All art featured is original and available for purchase.
Maltese ‘informal’ artist Rosette feels that abstract art helps us listen to our inner child.
“It keeps us asking questions about new things, playing and seeking joy around us. It stirs up our sense of curiosity, awe and innocence.”
Rosette’s art is inspired by the late Spanish painter Antoni Tàpies, who believed abstract art to be a form of alchemy or even magic.

Artist Christopher Saliba lives and works in Gozo. He is known for the inimitable style in which he depicts the local scenery in his rich, textured and highly distinctive paintings.
“Landscape painting is one of my favourite genres, though my perception of it is quite different from that of the typical plein-air (open air) artists” says Christopher. “My preoccupation goes beyond the mere representation of local landmarks and is rather inclined towards the physical and psychological implications of living on a relatively small island like Gozo.”
“I love to be at one with nature when I am working outdoors, whereas I consider my studio my intimate spiritual place where my creations meticulously and solemnly take shape.”
Mdina Skyline is a typical Christopher Saliba painting, with red being the dominant colour in the artist's vibrant palette.

According to The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the delicate Meditterranean watercolours of plein-air painter Andrew Smith are considered among the “best contemporary water-based media paintings from around the globe.”
A beautiful valley in Gozo is the inspiration for plein-air painting Wied il-Ghasri, Evening. This remote Gozitan bay is a popular spot among locals and tourists, who like to swim there during the warm summer months.
“I am a passionate watercolourist - it was my first love.”
Andrew Smith

Self-taught Maltese artist Jo Dounis takes inspiration from the ocean views of her Mediterranean homeland.
Abstract artist Jo Dounis’ paintings are fuelled by a love of light and a fascination with colour.
“If I could, I would paint over whatever is ugly with our world, with beautiful colour. I would like to bring colour into everyone’s lives.”
Jo Dounis
In Jo’s own words, Froth was inspired by “the glorious daily encounter of the sea and the sky at sunset in the Mediterranean.”
