What is fluid art? New abstracts from Jo Dounis

Welcome to the Allura Art blog. This time we talk to artist Jo Dounis about abstract art and her ‘fluid art’ paintings, the most recent of which we can now reveal.

The Allura Art collection is continuously expanding as our artists produce new original artwork. More new pieces by Allura’s artists can be found on the Allura Art website. All art featured is original and available for purchase.

Jo Dounis

Self-taught Maltese artist Jo Dounis takes inspiration from the ocean views of her Mediterranean homeland.

“I love natural bodies of water and all the different blues in lakes, rivers, seas and oceans.”

What is ‘fluid art’?

Fluid art is a term used to describe paintings created using paints which contain more liquid than traditional acrylic paints, or techniques which use special fluid mediums or extra water, to allow the paint to flow more easily. This allows the artist to pour and manipulate the paint to create effects similar to flowing water, or which resemble organic patterns and formations found in nature.

Jo uses a non-porous surface to help the fluid acrylic paint flow more freely. She begins with a fluid base, then builds layers over the top, combining the fluid acrylic paints with mixed-media techniques to create timeless, organic pieces which ripple, flow and pulsate.

Jo studied art and interior design and travelled extensively, developing a flair for photography and a taste for an otherworldly aesthetic.

While many of her ethereal marblesque abstracts resemble intricate and undulating waterscapes viewed from above, others recall celestial gases and distant nebulae, swirling and unfurling in deepest, darkest space.

Jo on abstract art

Jo, what would you say is the most special thing about abstract art?

“That it gives viewers the freedom to interpret a work as they wish, based on their emotions. In my opinion, it is more intensely personal than any other genre.”

What attracted you to abstract rather than representational painting?

“The freedom to be able to work from my imagination, without using a reference photo or a real-life scene. Instead I choose to feature particular colours or textures, depending on my mood. It also gives me an opportunity to explore fantasy as opposed to reality.”

Do you ever feel compelled to explain abstract art, and if so, what do you say?

“I don’t feel the need to try to explain abstract art, just as I wouldn’t try and explain any other genre. However I would tell viewers that they need to be able to view an abstract piece as a whole, so that by allowing themselves to be attracted by the use of colour, texture, form or light in the piece, they can feel sensations which inspire emotions.”
