Andrew Smith

British-Maltese artist Andrew Smith has exhibited in England, Malta, Hungary, Bulgaria, Italy, India, Albania and Pakistan. He was described by The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours as being among the “best contemporary water-based media paintings from around the globe.” Although he is known primarily for his watercolours, some of his new pieces were actually painted in gouache.

Referring to his many years of location painting, often in and around his Maltese home town of Birżebbuġa in St George's Bay, Andrew explains “I developed a keen interest for the interpretation of light and colour.” His dedication to capturing the natural landscape has resulted in beautifully rendered interpretations of the scenery and architecture he so loves and admires.

New paintings by Andrew

Here are some of Andrew’s most recent paintings.

Ta' Pinu At Night, Gozo by Andrew Smith

Ta' Pinu At Night, Gozo by Andrew Smith

Ta' Pinu At Night, Gozo was painted on location ‘en plein air’ during an evening at Gozo's iconic Ta' Pinu chapel. The artist wanted to capture the general feeling of isolation at this remote church, but also the night sky colours. In order to do this, special remote lighting equipment was used to enable the artist to complete the piece on site.

Portomaso Marina Nocturne is an impressionistic depiction of Portomaso Marina. It was painted in gouache, just after sundown, and captures the rapidly changing colours of the sky and the water amongst the berthed yachts.

Id-Dar ta’ Pultu, Saptan, Malta depicts Id-Dar ta’ Pultu, an abandoned house in a remote country valley near Birżebbuġa. The large country house was built nearly 300 years ago and carries its own legendary tale. Today it lies derelict in the deep Maltese countryside, accessible only to those who walk there. The building has a missing roof, through which the sunshine cascades from above, casting light into the interior. The painting was completed on location and painted from the inside.

Birzebbuga by Andrew Smith

Birżebbuġa by Andrew Smith

Painted in gouache, Birżebbuġa depicts St George's Bay at sundown as seen from the Qajjenza coastline in Malta. The artist wanted to capture the impressive skyline and the soothing colours as the sun was setting.

This Impressionistic interpretation of Valletta Grand Harbour at sunset was painted using the versatile medium of gouache. The painting, completed on location, depicts Malta's famous Grand Harbour against the distant haze of the colourful early evening sky.

Valletta Strait Street was painted in watercolour on location on Valletta's Strait Street, one of the many narrow, busy streets in Malta's capital. The artist wanted to capture the architecture and the lively atmosphere at that time, in the morning rush hour.

Xlendi sundown, Gozo was painted on location in Gozo. The piece shows the powerful sundown view at the mouth of the fishing village of Xlendi in Gozo, as the sun hangs above the cliffs beaming across the calm spring sea.
