The skyline features the silhouette of the town’s iconic church, visible through the overhanging foliage of the dense woodland, as if being watched covertly by some mysterious and hidden observer.

In Tal-Mirakli Chapel (below), artist Steve Sciberras depicts Tal-Mirakli, a 17th-century chapel nestled in the outskirts of Lija, Malta.

The chapel became known as 'the miraculous' because in 1743 a painting of the Madonna inside the chapel was said to have ‘shed a tear’. Shortly afterwards a huge earthquake hit the island, during which not a singe person died. The events were perceived to be connected and a miracle deemed to have taken place.

Gharb by Christopher Saliba features Gharb, a scenic town in the north of the island of Gozo. The artist uses a dramatic blend of reds, browns and oranges to emphasise the familiar shape of the church, positioning it in sharp contrast against the setting sun.

The Maltese city of Senglea is well known for its old fortifications including the Gardjola, and towering over the fortifications is the Porto Salvo church.

In his improvisational abstracts, such as Untitled B (below), Bulgarian painter Bogdan Dyulgerov invites us to connect with his vision and the emotions he experiences in the act of painting.

He applies many layers, and because every layer contains a story, he peels back paint in certain areas to reveal parts of the narrative which came before.
