Mistra en Plein Air by Debbie Bonello

Mistra en Plein Air by Debbie Bonello

Mistra en Plein Air was painted on location in Mistra Bay on Malta’s north-west coast. Artist Debbie Bonello captures the gentle ripples on the clear water on a calm and peaceful day.

To see Debbie painting on location, watch her episode of Artist Secrets by Allura.

Debbie also recently painted Dwejra en Plein Air. Situated close to Malta’s famous Victoria Lines fortifications, Dwejra is one of the artist’s favourite painting locations. Dwejra en Plein Air features the scene on a grey and windy Saturday morning, with the heavily wooded areas depicted with the artist’s characteristic expressive brushwork.

L-Ghadira by Steve Sciberras

L-Ghadira by Steve Sciberras

In L-Ghadira, painter Steve Sciberras sought to immortalise the fleeting beauty of the floodwater before it disappeared. Although there are no natural lakes in Malta, this temporary body of water appeared in a field on the outer limits of Lija after a period of particularly heavy rains. L-Ghadira translates as ‘The Lake’.

Sandstorm by Jo Dounis

Sandstorm by Jo Dounis

Sandstorm forms part of artist Jo Dounis’ body of fluid art paintings. The technique allows her to create an organic, flowing effect, virtually devoid of the brushstrokes which would give away the presence of the artist. Fluid art enables the artist to depict natural elements such as water, wind and skies with a convincing and evocative aesthetic, giving the viewer a more direct connection with the subject-matter.

To see Jo Dounis at work, watch her episode of Artist Secrets.

Reflections of Valletta by Kevin Sciberras

Reflections of Valletta by Kevin Sciberras

Reflections of Valletta by Kevin Sciberras is a panoramic view of the Capital of Malta, featuring the city skyline and its most prominent architectural landmarks: the Carmelite Church and the Anglican Cathedral. The surrounding urban sprawl of Valletta is conveyed minimally, with recognisable architectural elements dissolving into rich, transparent layers.

Kevin Sciberras took part in the second series of Artist Secrets, demonstrating his acrylic glazing techniques. To watch Kevin’s episode, click here.

Vittoriosa Domes by Kevin Sciberras

Vittoriosa Domes by Kevin Sciberras captures the breathtaking panorama of Vittoriosa's picturesque skyline, with its familiar steeples and domes. Among the architectural gems depicted are the iconic Parish Church of St. Lawrence, the graceful Annunciation church and the majestic Maritime Museum.

Senglea Point by Kevin Sciberras

Senglea Point by Kevin Sciberras

Senglea Point by Kevin Sciberras features Malta’s historic city Senglea, renowned for its ancient fortifications, notably the iconic Gardjola tower, which overlooks the historic ramparts. Dominating this architectural ensemble is the majestic Porto Salvo Church.

Nadur Skyline by Christopher Saliba

Nadur Skyline by Christopher Saliba

Nadur Skyline features the home-town of Gozitan painter Christopher Saliba. Rendered in broad, expressive strokes of rich oranges and reds, the composition hints at the presence of man-made structures on the horizon, with the iconic Maltese church silhouetted against the sky.

The vantage point is a favourite of the artist, who has painted the same scene before.

Christopher Saliba featured in Allura’s series Artist Secrets. Christopher’s episode was filmed at his studio in Gozo, where he created an earlier version of Nadur Skyline to demonstrate how he applies the texture and complementary colours which so striking characterises his work.
