Debbie Bonello

Debbie Bonello

Maltese artist Debbie Bonello is best known for her Impressionistic plein-air (open-air) landscapes and seascapes in oils. Her subjects are the many picturesque locations in Malta and Gozo, but she is particularly inspired by the scenic coastline of her home town of Mellieħa.

The painting Mellieha is a plein-air landscape depicting the artist’s beloved hometown in the north of Malta. Executed on a typically bright and sunny morning, its composition strikes a fine balance between the wild meadow in the foreground, the distinctive Mellieha Parish Church behind it and the soft blues of the sea and sky which meet at the far distant horizon.

As a COVID-related safety measure, non-essential travel between Malta and Gozo has been temporarily prohibited, preventing artists from taking outdoor painting trips. Debbie’s painting Gozo is therefore a rare studio piece, depicting the idyllic countryside of Malta’s sister island, Gozo on a typical gloriously sunny day.

Andrew Borg

Debbie Bonello is often accompanied on outdoor painting sessions by her fellow artist Andrew Borg. Andrew is best-known for his landscapes in oils or watercolour capturing the Mediterranean light of his native Malta, which he describes as a “plein air artist’s paradise.”

“We are spoiled for choice... dramatic cliff faces, turquoise-blue sea and magnificent baroque architecture.” Andrew Borg

Andrew is inspired by masters of light Sargent, Sorolla, Zorn and the Impressionists.

Magdalene Chapel is a plein air piece executed on Good Friday, depicting the lone chapel at the edge of Dingli Cliffs, the sunlight beaming down from above, connecting the sky to the earth.

Andrew’s work has brought international attention to Malta’s artistic production.

“Malta shines bright on the worldwide stage thanks to the caliber of artists who make the Rock their home, Borg being a prime example.” Bob Bahr, Plein Air magazine.

Christopher Saliba

Christopher Saliba applies vivid colour and textured brushwork to expansive horizons, described by esteemed writer Prof Joe Friggieri as “spiritual landscapes” depicting a “whirling inner world of sensations, impressions, fears, passions and hopes.”

“I try to enhance the idea of the primordial and the divine qualities of nature.” Christopher Saliba

Christopher juxtaposes the spatial limitations of island psychology with “the grandeur of nature and feelings of awe, vastness and infinity.”

The expressionist painting Gozitan Fields captures the muted colours of the countryside in Gozo during sunset. It reflects the artist's urge to capture the last rays of light of the day and the spontaneous execution is a testimony of this race against time.

Rosette Bonello

The Allura Art collection is varied in terms of style, genre and subject matter. Besides our landscape painters, abstract artists are also represented. These include Rosette Bonello, whose art is inspired by Informalism and abstract painters Antoni Tàpies and Afro Basaldella of the Scuola Romana.

Rosette’s artistic practice evolved symbiotically with her kindergarten teaching career. Witnessing the children’s uninhibited creativity led her to value self-expression and the pleasure of making over societal expectations of art.

Often concealing figures and scenes, her compositions are sensitive, instinctive and emotional responses to her experiences in life, and are rendered in delicate textures and elegant metallics.

The Challenger represents growth and an attempt by the artist to go beyond what she had already mastered. It was created spontaneously and intuitively, incorporating gold to represent beauty and soul.

Jo Dounis

Abstract artist Jo Dounis’ painting is fuelled by a love of light and a fascination with how colours blend, form and flow. She uses fluid acrylic and mixed-media techniques to create timeless, organic pieces which ripple, flow and pulsate.

"When I paint, I lose myself in my work and have no sense of time or reality. When it takes on a life of its own and tells its own story, I know that it is finished." Jo Dounis

Created close to Easter, Regeneration depicts a transformation, giving hope for a new life.

Dagmara Zaczeniuk

Dagmara Zaczeniuk

Dagmara Zaczeniuk

Dagmara Zaczeniuk has a unique approach to making art, which is difficult to define but all the more mysterious and appealing because of it. A sensitive observer of human emotions and an intuitive storyteller, she requires solitude to paint her enigmatic depictions of internal life.

Dagmara likes to leave the interpretation of her paintings to the viewer, but speaking of her piece Abstraction, untitled, she simply says “We are all made of cosmic dust.”
